Inspiring the Next Generation at Windsor Olympus Academy, Sandwell

Windsor Olympus Academy is bringing the future NHS workforce to life for its students through hands-on experiences, meaningful partnerships and real-world insight into healthcare careers. Working with NHS Sandwell and West Birmingham and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, the school has embedded a growing number of initiatives that not only raise awareness of NHS roles, but also empower students to lead on public health.

As part of their careers enrichment programme, students have taken part in:

  • NHS-led careers workshops and events, offering insight into a wide range of clinical and non-clinical roles
  • A clinical genetics initiative, introducing students to the world of medical research and personalised medicine
  • A hospital visit for 50 students to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, giving them the chance to tour a real ward and speak directly with NHS staff about career pathways

These experiences have helped demystify the NHS and allowed students to connect their learning to real-world roles, from allied health professions and nursing to research, IT, and diagnostics.

But careers awareness isn’t where this partnership stops - it also empowers students to lead change. The school is working towards Asthma-Friendly School status through a collaboration with NHS partners. As part of this, 30 students were trained as Asthma Ambassadors, supporting younger pupils in managing their condition and raising awareness through peer education. Students have even extended their impact to local primary schools, sharing tools and techniques to help children better regulate their asthma.

The school is now involved in a research project with the NHS on asthma care, deepening students’ understanding of public health, evidence-based practice, and the role young people can play in shaping future healthcare delivery.

Through this dual focus on health education and career inspiration, Windsor Olympus Academy is helping to grow a more informed, empowered and inclusive future NHS workforce - starting in the classroom and reaching far beyond.
