Leading teaching is complex.
Although the role varies, many phase leaders, key stage leaders, heads of department (or similar titles) are considered part of the middle leadership team. They often directly manage a team of teachers, and their work is focused on supporting effective teaching across the school.
Those in this role need to have a deep understanding of their context, community and the pupils and adults they work with. They also need to have expertise across several specialist areas related to their role (eg curriculum and assessment) and in approaches that, through working with their colleagues, enable their school to keep improving (eg professional development and implementation).
They must understand the relationship between these different domains, how they can change over time and how to contribute to a culture and conditions in which staff and pupils can thrive while maintaining the highest professional conduct as set out in the Teachers’ Standards.
That means developing expertise in teaching is also complex. This programme is a codification of essential knowledge, skills and concepts that underpin successful leadership of teaching. It sets out what those leading teaching should know and be able to do within the specialist areas related to their role and how to put new approaches into practice.
This NPQ is for teachers who have or are aspiring to have responsibilities for leading teaching in a subject, year group, key stage or phase.

This programme will be a highly practical blended programme with opportunities to reflect on best practice and hear from excellent leaders who deliver in these areas both locally and nationally.
