Celebrating Scientific Innovation at Cheslyn Hay Academy's Year 9 Science Fair

19th April 2024

This month, Cheslyn Hay Academy, a proud member of the Windsor Academy Trust (WAT) family, showcased the exceptional talent and creativity of its Year 9 students during the annual Science Fair Finals. Held in the school's lecture theatre, this pivotal event presented some of the brightest young scientific minds in action, supported by their peers, parents, and carers.

Dedication and Discovery

Over 200 Year 9 students initially participated in the competition, with the finalists exemplifying the highest level of achievement. These students presented their well-researched projects to an audience and a panel of judges, demonstrating exemplary skills in oracy and critical thinking.

Mr. Tom MacDonald, Headteacher at Cheslyn Hay Academy, praised the event's organisation:

"Mrs. Gemma Gleeson, our Assistant Faculty Director, has been instrumental in organising this inspiring event. Her dedication to fostering a nurturing and challenging environment for our students to thrive in scientific inquiry is truly commendable."

A Testament to Teaching Excellence

Mrs. Erica Harper, Windsor Academy Trust Lead for Science, highlighted the importance of the Science Fair in promoting a deeper understanding of scientific issues that impact our community and the world. "This fair is a brilliant example of how we can engage students with complex global issues through hands-on learning and critical engagement," Mrs. Harper said.

Environmental and Scientific Advocacy

Aligned with WAT's strategic vision for environmental care, many projects tackled themes of sustainability and conservation. Mrs. Nicky Smith, Head of the Science Faculty, noted, "Our finalists have shown remarkable initiative and insight, addressing some of the most pressing environmental issues of our time."

Recognising Commitment and Creativity

Mrs. Gemma Gleeson shared her thoughts on the finalists' journey: "Every student in Year 9 entered the Science Fair, which speaks volumes about their enthusiasm and commitment. These finalists, however, have gone above and beyond, refining their projects and ideas through hard work and persistence."
